Uma operação realizada pela Polícia Rodoviária Federal junto ao Ministério Público Federal (MPF), Ministério Público do Trabalho (MPT), Ministério do Trabalho e Previdência (MTE), Defensoria Pública da União (DPE) e Polícia Federal (PF) resgatou 11 trabalhadores em condições análogas à escravidão. As vítimas trabalhavam em carvoarias na cidade de Imperatriz.
A PRF informou que foram constatadas condições de trabalho precárias nos locais de produção de carvão, como transporte incompatível com a segurança veicular, recebimento de salário abaixo do mínimo, ausência de banheiro ou qualquer meio de promoção à higiene.
O banho dos trabalhadores era tomado em um rio próximo ao alojamento com a presença de cobras. A alimentação também era precária, sendo fornecido apenas um caldeirão de arroz. Além disso, eles eram submetidos a jornadas diárias exaustivas e sem repouso semanal.
As vítimas residiam na cidade de Grajaú, distante 560 km de São Luís, e foram encaminhadas para casa após o resgate. A PRF informou que os responsáveis pelas carvoarias não foram encontrados no local.
